Shortcast 48 – My Smokey Timbre

Shortcast 48 – My Smokey Timbre

RECYCLE, REDUCE, REUSE: This week, Andrew and D. discuss revisions that happen to works after they are released. From the canon-bending Star Wars re-releases from the late 1990s to the archival efforts of the Mega Man Legacy Collection, works are “preserved” in some form or another, but attention could (and should) be paid to the reasons for such preservation and re-release: is it in the interest of the creator? Of the owner? Of the audience? While they don’t generate any answers, our hosts certainly probe the topic for its diversity of impetus, goals, and cultural impact. Well, they do decide that pop culture needs some sort of library, but that’s about it.

WEEK IN GEEK: Andrew plays more Lego Dimensions and also attends a Pride-week cosplay contest while Dan plays Mega Man 2 in the Mega Man Legacy Collection.

HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN: Keiji Inafune’s hotly-anticipated, long-delayed, much-derided Mighty No. 9 has finally been released to much controversy. Dan and Andrew wade through the hot mess that some have called the “worst game launch ever” (which it most likely isn’t).

WHAM-BAM EXPLOSIONS: Current James T. Kirk actor, Chris Pine, said in a recent interview with SFX magazine that Star Trek can’t be cerebral in 2016. Andrew and Dan unpack that statement and talk about all the things working for and against the new Star Trek.

Episode 80 – Alien Control Party

Week in Geek: Andrew goes back to playing Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, while Dan goes way back into the past by playing the Nintendo DS release of the Super Famicom classic, Front Mission.

Also, friends of the show, Jason Tudor and Keith Houin’s sci-fi webcomic, Vorpal, now has a print version available for purchase. Check it out at Headshrinker’s Press.

Archiving Legacies: Dan and Andrew discuss how video games are being preserved and/or reintroduced to modern players and how the process isn’t as straightforward as it seems like it should be.

A +1 Parting of the Ways: Wizards of the Coast announces that it will not be holding an official presence at this year’s Gen Con, which is strange since Dungeons & Dragons creator, Gary Gygax, actually founded the show. What does this mean for WotC and Gen Con?
